Shanking at Perryville in Goodyear AZ (women's prison)

Shawna reported to me that there had been a huge increase in violence on the Lumley unit since the mass moving of inmates.  This move was done extremely unprofessionally with no concern whatsoever for the women or their belongings.   This followed with a shanking last week, CSI coming to Lumley to find the shank, which they did, and most important...a young woman was shanked resulting in blood loss and many sutures.  The response time of the staff to get this woman medical care was too long, she might have bled to death.  Perryville needs to better train for such incidents.  The young woman is okay but very sore.  Perryville, when you treat inmates like crap, this type of stuff happens.

Long detailed yard report to come from Shawna.

Perryville, if you are reading, and we know you will...I totally understand you are understaffed

Arizona News from LifeLines

ARIZONA NEWS – WINTER 2018   Carole Butcher/Linda Colbourn (Caretaking)

Hello. Firstly, as you all know, Lindesay has stepped down as your Coordinator and we would like to thank her for all the hard work and dedication she has shown to you all since she became your Coordinator in 2015. Carole, who has been your Coordinator before and Linda, who has been the Ohio Coordinator for many years will be looking after the state of Arizona until a new Coordinator can be found.

It seems that the general prison population is not happy with having death row inmates in their midst and this is causing a great deal of friction.

We bring you good news that Kevin Miles’ death sentence was vacated and changed to Life without Parole earlier this year. He was moved off the row in May 2018. We send our best wishes for the future to Kevin.
Gov. Doug Ducey said he will obey Arizona law and not Pope Francis who has now
declared that the death penalty is unacceptable in all cases. But the governor said that, at least for the moment, he doesn't have to make that choice.

The issue arises because the Pope, in the strongest statement ever, said in August that executions are ‘an attack’ on human dignity. And Francis promised to work ‘with determination’ to abolish capital punishment wherever it still exists. ‘I, of course, am going to listen to what the pope says,’ Ducey said when asked about it. The governor is a practicing Catholic. ’At the same time, I took an oath to uphold the law in Arizona,’ he continued.
’And I'm going to continue to uphold the law.’ (Source: wmicentral.com)
In mid August the Arizona Supreme Court upheld the guilty verdicts and death penalty of Jason E Bush. Justice John Pelander, writing for the court, rejected a series of arguments presented by attorneys for our friend that he did not get a fair trial.
Those contentions ranged from the procedures used in the pretrial questioning of potential jurors to the contention that the jury did not properly consider his mental illness and troubled past in deciding to sentence him to death. But the court split on the question of the death penalty with Appellate Judge Lawrence saying he believes the death penalty violates a state constitutional provision against cruel and unusual punishment.
Barry Lee Jones could be freed from death row after a federal judge overturned his
1995 conviction for the murder of a 4-year-old girl.
State prosecutors had until mid-September to re-file charges against him or he will be released from prison. This is according to a July 31 order from U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess that cited poor performance by Jones’ attorneys and a rush to judgment by investigators. The Arizona Attorney General's Office filed notice that it plans to appeal.

In mid September The Ninth Circuit heard oral arguments appealing the dismissal of a case that accused the Arizona Department of Corrections of concealing information about the state's executions; .Arizona's programs for execution have been under fire for several years. In the wake of Wood's botched execution, then-Governor Jan Brewer called for a full review of the process. In a December 2016 settlement, Arizona agreed to never again use midazolam in a lethal-injection execution. That same month, U.S. District Judge G. Murray Snow ruled that the press and the public have a First Amendment right to view executions in their entirety.

We continue to hold all our friends on the row in our thoughts and we send all of you our warmest greetings for the festive season.

Help needed for the women on Lumley CM, the prison is violating the law agreement it made in court with the ACLU. All other AZ prisons CM have heat, electric, hot water, and cleaning supplies

The ladies were taken back to CM, Wednesday at 4:15 in the morning. It was still dark out, it was done in a very rude and horrible way, their belongings were dragged out & it was a mess. They were taken back to the old cells and I'm a little confused on this, so forgive me if I get this part of the information wrong, but the old cells that they were taken out of due to the ACLU agreement (lawsuit), that were in such terrible condition. They were taken back, and they were told the old cell block was going to be fixed. There is nothing fixed in it!! The ladies do not have electricity, they do not have hot water, no heat, No cable. DW Willis told the ladies that they would have cleaning supplies to clean these cells. They have not been given any cleaning supplies. There is graffiti, snot, & crap literally on the walls, it’s filthy. I guess a 3rd bunk was put in over the tables and not removed. I don't understand what this means, so you ladies that have been on Lumley can probably tell me or know what I'm talking about here. I'm told to get in the bunk, if you're on the bottom bunk and you want in, you have to kind of pick your legs up to get them in there and you can't lay on your side with one leg on top of the other leg because of that third bunk. It's crowding in and I'm not sure exactly how this is situated in the cells. But nothing is fixed. They were given a nice new mattress and then they were taken away and given thin yoga like mats. And of course, the prison doesn't care. ***Plz remember, everyone in CM is not a behavior problem. And not all have murdered someone. And even if they have, they are still human beings, Americans, and have people that loves them. Most important, the Lord loves them. (I know you ladies know this but some in this group do not get it                                      Regina Dorsey

Emergent problem at Lumley Unit

The inmates at Lumley have  been without toilet paper since 9/14/18, when 10 rolls were brought over from another unit.  Over 200 inmates reside on Lumley....10 rolls?  This is over the top.  PLEASE have a heart and call the warden,  Kim Currier at Main Telephone:
(623) 853-0304   and

Director Charles L. Ryan at 602-542-5225

This is a health & hygiene issue.  Inmates have been told to use water.   They were also denied any state issue cleaning supplies.  They cant clean the showers between use or their cells.  If this is not corrected when i hear from Shawna at the end of the week, i will be contacting the media and ACLU.   This hurts the women with no money to by toilet paper at the commissary.  Each inmate is to receive 2 rolls per week.

AZ gets $25,397 per inmate per year, i think they can bloody well afford toilet paper and cleaning supplies!

Arizona Statelines from LifeLines

A very warm welcome to new writers on both sides of the pond and I hope everyone’s friendships, both new and old, are going well. Thank you to everyone for your letters, emails and cards; it is always good to hear from you.

The main news on the row is coming from Central Unit at ASPC Florence. I’m afraid I have now had multiple reports that the guys’ freedom has been reduced in recent months.

I understand there have been a number of lockdowns, meaning the guys are confined to their cells 24 hours a day, sometimes for several days at a time. It seems these have been in response to staff shortages and fights/attacks, however people have been locked up even when the violence happened in a different pod (area). It is also reported that, even when not in a lockdown, there are restrictions on when people can leave their cells and for how long, and that yard time outside has also been reduced, some say to at least half. I gather it has been extremely hot and uncomfortable in the cells, which we have some capacity to imagine in the UK as it has been, and continues to be, unseasonably hot over here. Besides all of this being deeply unpleasant for the guys it is concerning that blanket punishments are being issued as a result of a few people’s actions. I am also getting numerous reports that the mail is severely disrupted, with many people not hearing from their penfriends for months at a time and letters appearing to go missing. Please keep me posted on further developments. (Source: all of you – thank you!)

It sounds like a very stressful time at Central Unit at the moment and my thoughts are with you all, and with your penfriends who I know keenly feel your discomfort.

I do have some good news though, I’m glad to say. Michael Ray White’s death sentence has been overturned and the state have been ordered either to issue a lesser sentence or to have a resentencing hearing. The court ruled that Mr White’s lawyer failed to challenge the alleged motive given by the state, which then became the sole aggravating factor applicable to issuing the death penalty. The court also said his lawyer had ‘utterly failed’ to investigate mitigating factors in Mr White’s life that could have been used to argue against the death penalty. I wish Michael all the very best going forward. (Source: Cronkite News)

Finally, I am afraid I have decided to step down as coordinator at the end of September. I would like you know that it was a very difficult decision as I feel a connection and responsibility to everyone on and off the row. However, due the stresses of my job, I have decided it is best I step down. I also feel I need to give more time to my friends and family, including my own penfriend.

I imagine it may be difficult for people, on the row particularly, to have to get to know a new coordinator every few years, for which I am sorry. I have gotten so much out of the role and my exchanges with everyone; I have not only enjoyed getting to know you all, but I have been humbled by people’s commitment, strength, compassion and gratitude. You have all taught me a great deal, for which I thank you; I will do my best to carry it with me.

I will continue to be here to support you until October, so do please continue to get in touch. Once a replacement is found the details will go in the Wing and they will write to everyone to introduce themselves; I am sure they will be a strong source of support to you all. Any letters that get delivered to me after I have handed over to the new person will be forwarded on to them so please don’t worry about that.

It has been an honour supporting you all and I wish you all the very best going forward.

In peace and love,
Lindesay

Coming new the blog soon!!

Shawna has decided to include a new section to the blog which will give a voice to inmates at Perryville as well as inmates in other facilities.  The inmates will be writing about their own prison experience and how life in their yard goes.  Some of the things this will give voice are how inmates are treated by other inmates and guards, how they live day to day, what jobs they hold and how they are treated at work, prison conditions, food, how they get along with their roommate if they have one (cellie) and so on.  What this will not be for is case information.  This should prove exciting to read and interesting at the least!!
